Merthyr Tydfil
New Leisure Pools

Welcome

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council (MTCBC) and WellbeingMerthyr are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of the local community.

We are proud to announce that we are in the process of redesigning our leisure pools, with decarbonisation plans at the forefront, following a request for support of redevelopment costs from the Welsh Government.

Work is underway to bring swimming facilities at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre back into public use following a £6 million investment by Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council. Works began in November 2022 and are expected to run until Autumn 2023.

This website provides information on the plans for the developments and will hopefully answer any questions you may have.

Low-carbon future

MTCBC have appointed leading leisure development experts Alliance Leisure Services Ltd and Capita to recommission the three pools and provide an improvement to the wet side changing rooms.

The Alliance Team have considered the opportunities for decarbonising the leisure centre in tandem with re-commissioning the swimming pools. Decarbonisation measures include replacing gas fuelled boilers with more efficient air source heat pumps. This is predicted to cut carbon emissions by 61 percent, creating a more sustainable future for the centre.

Swimming for all

The new leisure development at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre will provide water-based activities for a wide range of ages and abilities. Learning to swim is a vital life skill, while swimming and other aquatic activities are proven to improve people’s mental health and physical wellbeing. We look forward to providing brand new aquatic facilities for the local community to enjoy.

The new facilities include:

  • Main swimming pool (25m with six lanes)
  • Teaching pool
  • Leisure pool with interactive water play
  • Refurbished changing facilities
